Book and a Bite

Literacy is critical to a child’s academic success, particularly early-grade reading. Reading at grade level is one of the strongest predictors of later success in school. The summer slide is a decline in reading ability and other academic skills that can occur over the summer months when school isn't in session.

RISE  forged a community/school partnership to provide summer learning events that provide access to free meals, books, STEM, and enrichment activities.

In the first two years of the Book and a Bite pilot, we have given away over 5,000 books, served over 6,000 meals and delivered over 7,000 hands-on STEM activities.  In 2017, 78% of students in Kuna held or increased their reading scores.

*This project addresses the Early Grade Reading Community Benchmark.
